We purchased this television for our bedroom. I read previous reviews on Amazon and this influenced our purchase. Previously we purchased the Sony Bravia 52" 1080 from Amazon and were extremely happy with the picture quality. I highly recommend both televisions.......
I bought this TV at Best Buy for $447. Was surprised at how light it was, especially compared to the 25" tube TV it was replacing. Anyway, got it out of the box, attached the stand, attached the cables and it was ready to go. Automatic setup took less than 5 minutes, and even found HD channels I didn't know I had (Explanation: I have Time Warner cable and this would just be plugged directly into the coax with no cable box. Previously I was only seeing about 70 SD channels, this TV found about 90 SD and about 10 HD channels, so I was pleasantly surprised.) The picture quality is great, sound is good, menu and operations are fairly straightforward and intuitive. Only reason I docked it one star is because the remote is only compatible with Sony products (Bravia specifically). I still need to keep my old remote to work the DVD player that will be used with this TV. Selfishness and greediness gets a one star deduction. One sticky point, the "Favorites" menu lists the raw channel number, and rearranges then depending on which one is currently being viewed. How do I know what channel 112.1113 is?? I choose it to find out, then go back to the list and they are all rearranged... ......
I've now purchased two of these sets for family members, and I can't recommend it highly enough as a great low-priced HDTV perfect for bedroom or gaming use. It sets up very quickly and the built-in ATSC tuner easily finds all local digital TV channels. The set has a good complement of composite, component and HDMI inputs, and the included remote functions well. Note that as with all TVs, you will have to make adjustments for accurate color out of the box - manufacturers still set their default settings to make the colors look good in a store, but not accurate. Still, you can't find a better deal for the price, and unless you're sitting two feet away you'll never notice the difference between the 1366x768 resolution of this set and a full 1920x1080p model. Note that one of this unit's best features is the ability to mark unused inputs as "Skip" so you don't have to cycle through multiple inputs to toggle between TV and Blu-Ray or a cable or satellite box. This set also wall mounted beautifully using the Sanus MF110-B1 pivoting arm wall mount - they make a great combo!......
I'm very please with this TV. The colors are beautiful especially on the HG channels. Someone said the colors on their set weren't very vibrant. I had the same experience at first, until I went into the settings and saw I could change it to vivid color. I clicked on that and all of the sudden my colors were amazing. Great TV. Only minus is information appears on top of the screen when you change channels and stays there a bit too long for my taste. ......
I'd been holding out forever before buying an HDTV, but picked this Sony out for myself for Father's Day, and in this size to fit where our old 27" tube TV fit. Plasma wasn't an option in this size. I picked a 720p model based on every opinion I read that said 1080p didn't matter for broadcast TV or DVDs in a TV this size, and being able to see the pizels when I'm a foot away doesn't matter, I agree. I also cost just over $500 -- what I wanted to pay. That said, I am completely mystified why the whole world seems to be moving to LCD TVs. All scenes, even in the most dialed-down modes of brightness, contrast and backlight, have intense highlights -- as if they're in bright studio lighting with no fill. The color out of the box is nothing like on a regular tube TV -- interesting, and watchable, but not anything close to realistic. I plan to buy one of those home theater "tune your color at home" DVDs but I doubt it's going to help much. Color and contrast also vary a lot off-angle. I'm used to this from staring at LCD monitors at work for years, but it's disappointing in a TV. I was also very disappointed that the audio out on this TV is not affected by the volume control, but a fixed level. This has been going on for years in other TVs -- I bought my 27" tube set, a JVC, because it has this feature over a Panasonic that I returned because it didn't, but it means that you need yet another remote or a new receiver and a custom remote to control it if you don't use the built-in speakers, which actually sound okay for in-TV speakers, but nothing like the stereo pair with external amp I've been using. BTW, current Panasonic's don't even HAVE an audio out -- you need an HDMI capable receiver to put between your video source and the TV to have audio through a decent receiver and speakers. So, I moved the old TV back where it was, and put this in family room, where we had a pretty small TV, and it's fine there and an improvement, and I can simply use the internal speakers, but if and when I decide to spring for a really decent theater size TV, (which requires new furniture and a lot more money) I'll buy a 50" or 54" plasma -- no more LCDs for me for serious watching. ......
